Little Scarey

In the last couple of days I’ve done a couple of things a little out of the odinary: I’ve been to a homeless men’s shelter and I’ve visited “The Block”. And no, I’m not talking about the home renovation show, I’m talking about The Block, which was one of the first pieces of land in urban areas owned by Aboriginal people (aside from forty thousand years previous, but you know what I mean. The block…

Chloe Dallimore

I went to see singer, actress and dancer, Chloe Dallimore do her first “cabaret” show last night at Sydney’s Statement Bar, and I guess, in all honesty, I was a little disappointed. She’s has a beautiful voice, she can dance, and she’s gorgeously leggy in that Rhonda Burchmore kind of way, but there was a “certain something” missing from last night’s show. There were a couple of funny stories, there were a couple of moving…

Customer is Always Wrong

Customer is Always Wrong

In the forty years I have lived on the planet, I have learned one very important thing about business: the customer is always wrong. Actually, this wasn’t always the case. There was a time many years ago when the customer was always right. For example, when I worked at Coles in the mid 80s, a customer came in with a bag of oranges in a Woolworths bag, requesting a refund. Against my better judgement, the…

A Muslim, a Christian, and a Jew walk into a church

I saw the sign a couple of weeks ago advertising an evening featuring a Christian, a Muslim and a Jew, talking about issues of diversity and belief and quickly jotted it in my diary as an interesting Sunday night excursion. I’ve never been to a Uniting Church before. Well, actually as a child I used to go…

Stone Sculptures in Sydney

Autumn Shadows

It’s Sunday evening and autumn has, at last, arrived in Sydney. After temperatures in the late 20s and early 30s last week, the last few days have brought with them those nights where you need to wear layers and those wonderful long autumn shadows. It’s also meant that when you go outside to “warm your bones”, as I did today, the available sunlight is no longer quite enough. After getting out of bed late I…

Kylie & The Box

Kylie & The Box

Graeme and I enjoyed a terrific afternoon at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum where two of the current exhibitions were right up our street: exhibitions featuring fashions and photographs from Kylie Minogue and about the fiftieth anniversary of television in Australia. The Kylie exhibition came about through a large donation to the Victorian Arts Centre (I think) of dresses, illustrations, production notes, etc by Kylie herself. The donation has been transformed into an exhibition which features a…
