My part of Surry Hills is undergoing a lot of change at the moment—perhaps the most significant shift we’ve seen since COVID, and it’s hard to know where it’s all going to end up.
Recent Closures
A while back, four shops closed down to make way for a new development:
- The chemist: A place I loved going to, which has since relocated down to Redfern.
- A regular massage spot: Now gone without a trace.
- Kurtosh: A fantastic coffee shop that I loved visiting for coffee and a sweet treat. They’ve unfortunately told me they won’t be returning.
- A nameless tobacconist.
Healthcare Disruptions
Perhaps the most significant change on a personal level has been the sudden closure of the Surry Hills Family Medical Center, which I’ve been going to for as long as I’ve lived here. My doctor has looked after me quite a bit since my amputation and illness a few years ago.
Some of the doctors have moved to Poet’s Corner, which is much further away and a bit of a nuisance, so I”ve registered with a closer doctor instead. They still have my records, and I managed to get a referral via email this week.
Another blow has been losing my podiatrist. As a lower-limb amputee managing diabetes and associated neuropathy, keeping an eye on my other foot is crucial. I thought I’d finally found someone who was going to stay, but apparently, a lot of people are leaving the podiatry industry. I’m not sure what the main factor is—whether it’s money or just looking at people’s feet all day—but I’ll need to track him down or find another place in Redfern.
We’ve also recently lost Ardi’s, a fantastic butcher and café down the road.
The Upsides
Amidst all the empty shops and constant changes, there are still a few constants: including the big Coles and Harris Farm, and some associated restaurants and bars which are fantastic.
Looking Forward
Right now, the neighbourhood is looking a bit drab with so many empty storefronts. I just wish we had a few more interesting shops to browse instead of endless boutique nail salons and massage parlours—maybe a bookstore or something a bit unique.
I’m sure things will liven up once the major new development on Crown Street finally opens, but in the meantime, it’s a bit of a waiting game.
