Important Cultural Artefact
“It’s an important cultural artefact”, I heard one American tourist tell an other. As I stood at the traffic lights, I heard her tell her friend she needed to wait until the sign came around.
In the midst of other warning signs, there was a sign warning people that if you were caught peeing in public, it could cost you $200. I laughed and showed them the photograph I’d snapped earlier, where it could cost you more.
Deep down though I wondered why we needed to have the sign anyway.
Yeah, it’s a bit gross, but at the end of a week which has involved a hostage siege in Sydney, the tragic death of over 100 kids in Pakistan, and the stabbing murder of eight kids in Cairns, it does seem a little unimportant eh?
Lovely Weekend
It’s been an unexpectedly busy, but lovely weekend. As of Friday night, I had no plans for the weekend at all. But all of a sudden, a series of “spontaneous invitations” came through for lunch and dinner yesterday, and to catch up with my friend Kate, today.
We haven’t seen each other in real life for almost a year. The last time was at the opening of the Biennale of Sydney in March last year. At the time, Kate joked, “this might be the last gathering we go to for a while” and indeed she was right. She’s been coming to Sydney regularly to take care of her 93 year old mother, but trying to limit her interactions to protect her own health, and that of Joan. We’ve Skyped and spoken on the phone many times, but realised today, last March was the last time had seen each other in real life. So for most of the day, we masked up.
We also visited the exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, featuring the works of Lindy Lee, called “Moon In A Dew Drop”. There’s a few works which did absolutely nothing for me (a range of very “dark” works), but there’s also lots of works like the two below which I really, really loved. I really love the way her works “play” with light and dark, and shade and colour. Definitely worth a look.

Play School Turns 40
Play School is a terrific show, although at the age of forty, it’s been quite a while since I’ve watched it. However, it was one of my childhood favourites, even at an age when it was no longer really designed for me.
This week, Play School celebrated forty years on television. And today, an exclusive photograph of Jemima caught immediately after the Fortieth Birthday Celebrations of “Play School”. She really has to watch her drinking!
