My Blogs

Since 2002, I’ve been writing here about life, the universe, and everything. My interests include genealogy, history, and the arts. More recently, since July 2023 I’ve been writing about my experiences as a below-the-right-knee amputee.

West End Girls

At Saturday’s BBQ, I’m sure I bored a couple of people here and here with tales of Swedish pop band, West End Girls, who do covers of songs by Pet Shop Boys. Not content with boring two people, I thought I’d bore you as well… Here’s a few of their songs… Suburbia Domino Dancing (mina favourit) West End Girls The list goes on… they’re worth a look, I think.

Messy Old Couch

It’s a messy, weather-stained and ripped old couch, but gosh I love it. I’ve had this couch for about 15 years or so. I bought it when I was living in Wagga Wagga. In the intervening period, it’s gone from “main couch”, to “sofa bed backup”, and finally the “couch on the balcony” that I hope the neighbours won’t notice. Despite all this, it’s a nice place to sit back and relax after a long…

Sunburn Sunday

Sunburn Sunday

I didn’t plan to spend all of the afternoon enjoying food and wine at Circular Quay, but somehow it happened. My friend Kate gave me a call late this morning, asking if I’d like to join her and a friend (visiting from Beijing) for lunch at the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art). Somehow though, something went wrong in our planning, and we ended up having lunch downstairs…

Flashback

Flashback

“Do you think we might be dead?”, I said to a colleague in the lift at work today. She laughed in recognition. Just five minutes earlier, there had been an influx of former colleagues in our workplace, and we both wondered if maybe some terrible tragedy had occured, and we had found ourselves in a different universe where everyone we had previously known had come back to visit. There were two people who had left…

Too Darn Hot

Too Darn Hot

It was raining lightly as I came home from work tonight. And what a relief! When I got up this morning it was already one of those stinky hot days. I remember hearing on the radio it was already in the twenties in some parts of Sydney even before six o’clock this morning. And then at about nine-thirty, the bloke from the Bureau of Meteorology “upgraded” the forecast for coastal Sydney to 38 degrees. Ugh….
