Bright Abyss

It’s Thursday night and I’m watching “Call For Help”, the only show I regularly watch on the “How To Channel” on Foxtel. In the midst of all those shows about how to make your own scrapbook (seriously), this is a really great show about using a whole range of digital equipment. The show opens with a spectacular scene, as a giant wind machine throws the small cast of five into a mellee of fabric and…

Wall projection at Sticky Bricks at Northcott Estate

Sticky Bricks

Every day on the way to and from work, I walk past the Northcott Estate. Known locally in Surry Hills as “the twin towers” or “suicide towers”, the estate which houses around 1,000 people has a “bad reputation”. Over the years there have been numerous calls for their demolition, partially due to changing attitudes towards these “eastern europe style” tower blocks, and partially due to the changing demographic nature of Surry Hills. The area is…

Family Stuff

It’s Saturday afternoon and it’s another warm day in Sydney. As you walk around outside, the sun beats down, so it’s nice to be indoors with the fan blowing. Since I last wrote I’ve been a busy little beaver, both with work and attending a few Sydney Festival events and going to the movies (although I have to admit it was the same movie I saw twice!) My niece, Michelle came down from Lismore for…

All Wear Bowlers

As the show opened (late), we watched maybe 5 or 10 minutes of two “silent film” characters in bowler hats wandering about on a projected screen. Progressively,…

Brokeback Mountain

I don’t remember the exact moment I started crying, but I think it was probably when Ennis (the character played by Heath Ledger) delivers this line: “Because of you, Jack, that I’m like this. I’m nothing… and nowhere.” Oh my, I’ve just suddenly become teary again. Yeh, I’m pretty sure that was the moment I started crying and I don’t think I really recovered until the very end of the film. It’s strange though, because…

Welcome to 2006

It’s Sunday night and I’m struggling to find something interesting to watch on television, so I thought I’d update my diary, the first time since arriving home from Lismore. Upon reflection I enjoyed some aspects of going home for Christmas and didn’t enjoy others. I didn’t enjoy the heat and I still find Lismore a little boring, but it was great to see my family and to chill out for a while. I also took…
